Sylvester Stallone releases another Rambo Movie franchise

Sylvester Stallone is back as Rambo for the final time. Rambo: Last Blood – the 5th entry in the long-running action thriller franchise – is a direct callback to the first chapter, 1982’s First Blood, the only redeeming entry in a franchise that has repeatedly failed to emulate what worked the first time around.

The story involves Rambo living a quiet life on a ranch in Arizona with the beautiful Gabrielle and her grandmother. When Gabrielle runs off to Mexico to find her estranged father and finds herself in the hands of vicious drug dealers and human traffickers, it is left to Rambo to shoot ‘em up and bring her home.

Last Blood is violent and gory and easily forgettable — if not for the bone-crunching violence, which one would like to wipe out as soon as possible. The battle-hardened war veteran played by Sylvester Stallone brutally kills scores of people. That they all happen to be Mexicans is surely a coincidence in this current political age.

The screenplay feels utterly tossed-off and generic, more resembling the pilot for a Rambo television series than a proper sendoff. It is old-fashioned, unnecessary, xenophobic and incredibly insensitive, but for its audience, it will be immensely satisfying.

Stallone has already said that he’d be willing to make another Rambo movie if this one proves successful. But we hope next time he’s a bit more serious because the character deserves better, and so does the audience.
