Barcelona Complete Griezmann Signing

Barcelona have officially announced the signing of Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid, with the French forward putting pen-to-paper after the Blaugrana paid his full €120m (£107m/$134m) release clause.

The former Real Sociedad forward and 2018 World Cup winner has signed at the Camp Nou for the next five seasons through to June 2024 – a contract that includes a buyout clause of €800m.

The move has not been without drama, as Atleti recently hit out at both Barca and Griezmann himself for their conduct after it was revealed that the two parties had been in negotiations and reached an agreement in March – a time during which Diego Simeone’s side were still fighting in La Liga and the Champions League.

With the deal now completed, however, Griezmann will link up with Lionel Messi and co as the current Spanish champions aim to win the Liga title for a third consecutive season.

Nigeria Wins South Africa  2-1 and Goes to AFCON Semi-Finals

After knocking Egypt, the hosts and favourites, out in the round of 16, South Africa’s Africa Cup of Nations was brought to an end thanks to a late Troost-Ekong goal despite battling back to level matter in the second half.

Nigeria took the lead through Samuel Chukwueze in the first half and looked the better team but a second half header from Zungu sent Bafana Bafana level. The goal was looked at by VAR, new to the competition since the start of the quarter-final, but the referee say it was fair.

With the game looking destined to go to extra-time, Troost-Ekong poked a corner home at the back post after goalkeeper, Williams, came out and missed with a haymaker to punch clear.

Nigeria are the second side in the semi-final after Senegal beat Benin earlier in the day.

Brazil Win 9th Copa America Title BRA 3-1 PER

Goals: Everton (15), Gabriel Jesus (45+3), Richarlison (90 pen)

Gabriel Jesus threatened to turn from hero to villain but his Brazil team-mates sealed a 3-1 win over Peru at the Maracana and a ninth Copa America title.

Tite’s men beat their final opponents 5-0 during the group stage but were under pressure when Peru skipper Paolo Guerrero cancelled out Everton’s opener with a 44th-minute penalty.

Jesus, whose excellent wing play laid on Brazil’s first goal, restored the advantage in first-half injury time.

That set the five-time world champions’ on course for their first major honour in 12 years, although a clumsy aerial challenge on Carlos Zambrano was enough to earn Jesus a second yellow card and set up a fraught finale – until substitute Richarlison dispatched a final-minute penalty to spark buoyant celebrations.

COZA: CAN Opens Investigation into Busola Dakolo’s Allegations Against Biodun Fatoyinbo

The leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), says it is already seeking ways to address the rape allegations raised by celebrity photographer, Busola Dakolo, against the Senior Pastor, Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA), Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo.

Busola, in a video released few weeks ago, accused Pastor Fatoyinbo of raping her some years ago when she was under 18.

CAN’s acting General-Secretary, Joseph Daramola, in a statement released in Abuja, on Sunday, appealed to both parties to sheath their swords and stop the media war in the interest of the church and for the greater glory of God.

He said: “It is disheartening how some commentators and columnists have been insulting the Body of Christ in Nigeria as a result of this incident.

“Like we have earlier stated, it doesn’t matter who is involved, rape is ungodly and reprehensible. But we have resisted the temptation to jump into conclusion since a body like ours will be expected to have uncovered the truth about the matter before making public statements and not base its position merely upon media reports.”

He added that, although, COZA had not been an active member of CAN, but that does not put the church outside the spiritual watch-care of CAN.

“CAN is the umbrella body for Christians and churches in Nigeria. Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church, does not turn back anyone that comes to Him and CAN also does not. The Ministry of the Church, according to Jesus Christ, is the Ministry of Reconciliation, which is centred on true love and forgiveness of those who repent,” Daramola added.

USA Wins There First Women’s World Cup on European Ground

Megan Rapinoe struck a 61st-minute penalty before Rose Lavelle netted a fine solo goal as the United States beat Netherlands 2-0 to become Women’s World Cup winners for the fourth time.

Reign FC forward Rapinoe plundered her sixth goal of the tournament to ensure Jill Ellis’ side successfully defended their title at the expense of a Netherlands team that fought bravely to overcome their underdogs tag but ultimately came up short.

The goal, which came after a VAR review highlighted Stefanie van der Gragt’s foul on Alex Morgan, drew Rapinoe level with Morgan and England’s Ellen White in the goalscoring stakes, while Netherlands forward Lieke Martens cut a frustrated figure as the Dutch struggled to create chances.

Lavelle provided the best moment of an entertaining clash in Lyon when she carried the ball from the centre circle to the edge of the box before producing a classy finish, the quality of which reflected everything crowds at this World Cup have come to expect from its dominant team.

The European champions certainly played their part but, perhaps fittingly after a tournament marked by the use of technology, the contest hinged on a challenge that might have gone unnoticed without it.
